How is the hourly rate calculated?

Working days are 52 weeks times your working days per week, minus vacation, public holidays and sick days. Billable hours are working days times hours per day times your billable share. The hourly rate is your target income plus business costs, divided by the billable hours. The day rate is the hourly rate times your hours per day.

Why the billable share matters most

Not every working hour can be invoiced. Quotes, invoicing, bookkeeping, sales and learning take time too. The lower your billable share, the fewer hours carry your income and costs, and the higher each billable hour has to be.

What the calculator does not include

It does not calculate income tax, social insurance or pension contributions, which depend on your country and situation. Include them in your target income, or ask your tax advisor what to plan for. The result is net: add VAT on top if you charge it.

Hourly rate questions

Is the target income before or after tax?

Before income tax and social insurance. If you think in take-home pay, add what you expect to pay in tax and contributions to the target income.

Is the result with or without VAT?

Without VAT. The calculator works with net amounts; if you charge VAT, it is added on top of the rate on your invoice.

What billable share should I enter?

Your own share: look at the hours you invoiced last year and divide them by the hours you worked. If you have no history yet, try a few values and see how strongly the rate changes.

Why is the rate rounded up?

So the rate covers your target. Rounding down would leave you slightly short over a year of billable hours.

Can I share or save a result?

Yes. The page address updates with your inputs, so you can bookmark it or send the link. Nothing is stored on our side.
